HLPUSD Extends Dismissal Period through May 4

Classes to Resume May 5

In keeping with county and state guidance, Hacienda La Puente Unified School District is extending its student dismissal period through May 4, with a tentative return date of Tuesday, May 5

The action follows a March 20 recommendation from the Los Angeles County Office of Education and “Stay at Home and “Safer at Home” orders issued March 19 by the State of California and Los Angeles County to reinforce social distancing protocols believed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

While schools are considered essential functions under the orders, District leaders have directed most employees to remain at home with their families during the dismissal.

District leadership along with select administrators, instructional team members, police services, security, custodial, network services and food services workers will remain on duty – following social distancing protocols – to provide meal programs, handle support needs and create enrichment materials for students.

In the first week of dismissals, Hacienda La Puente Unified served more than 20,250 meals.

The Board of Education will continue to meet, following adjustments in state meeting rules that allow electronic sessions. Meetings will be livestreamed.

“These are challenging times for all of us, but especially for our families whose lives have been disrupted by the closing of businesses, loss of jobs and the need to take charge of their children’s education,” Interim Superintendent Annie Bui said. “We stand with our community.”

The District has posted a wealth of community and instructional resources at www.hlpschools.org, including:

“Our schools are at the heart of our community. We will work to provide all our families with the support they need to keep their children safe and healthy, as well as to ensure a continuity of instruction,” Bui said.

The situation remains highly fluid, with the governor and county education leaders indicating school closures might be urged through the end of spring semester.

The District will provide updates as they become available
